Nav Canada embraced the concepts of Safety Management Systems (SMS) and safety culture as part of our founding principles in 1996. In this paper, we would like to share some of the practical SMS processes employed and the very positive results that have been achieved.rnFor example, the robust nature of our reporting, and the impact of our SMS on our safety performance, is reflected in a greater than three-fold increase in aviation occurrence reporting along with a corresponding 25 per cent improvement in our primary safety performance metric, a moving average of IFR-to-IFR losses of separation.
