摘要

The trend towards lower fresh water consumption and effluent minimization has been an important topic in recent years. The stringent closure of the water circuits in the paper making process will make it necessary to consider the use of circulation water also for the feed of paper chemicals, such as retention aids. However, the impurities in the circulation water can interfere with the retention aids causing a substantial decrease in the efficiency of the retention aid or even make them completely ineffective. The most detrimental impurities for cationic polyelectrolytes are anionic polyelectrolytes. They can form complexes, thereby cause deposits, and make these chemicals completely ineffective. The aim of this study was to find out the needs for purification of circulation water containing anionic substances in case it is used as flocculant's feed water. It was also investigated if the formation of polyanion-polycation complexes could be utilized in the treatment of circulation water used for the dilution of cationic retention aid.
