Globally, secondary fibre liners are strategically important packaging products providing lower cost substitutes for kraft liners while increasing the utilisation of recycled fibre. The recognised economic and environmental advantages of these materials have hitherto been exploited only on a limited scale in New Zealand. Furnish options based on local waste paper collections were evaluated for linerboard manufacture. The potential benefits from fibre processing scenarios involving fractionation and reject refining were also assessed. Quality gains from both blending and controlled placement of recycled and virgin fibre components in a duplex sheet were examined. The quality of laboratory-made sheets was highly dependent upon waste composition, with relatively small changes in nature and proportions causing significant changes (>10%) in all strength properties. The addition of ca. 30% lightly refined softwood kraft and/or semi-chemical eucalypt fibre into the waste paper furnish improved tensile (>15%), burst (>20%) and short span compression (>5%) properties while reducing dependency on waste paper quality. Fractionation of the recycled fibre coupled with reject refining yielded comparable strength along with possible benefits in freeness and/or energy consumption compared with compound, or whole stock refining. An optimum screening level, at around 40% mass reject rate was identified, a point at which sheet strength gains appeared to be maximised. Addition of eucalypt and kraft fibre as the top sheet on a recycled base improved overall strength values but to a lesser extent than observed with internal addition to handsheets.
