摘要

The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) has announced its intention to fly a modest Mars exploration mission in 2011. The mission has been dubbed "microscout" since its concept would likely be Pl-led in a similar manner to NASA's Scout mission in 2007 albeit with a smaller cost cap that would be consistent with the CSA's current budgetary envelope. A study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of conducting a planetary exploration mission on a budget of C$150M. A strawman mission, the Mars Atmospheric Science Orbiter, was developed internally and roughly costed at C$157M. The mission was inspired from the CSA's SCISAT spacecraft to provide a strong basis for conducting analogies. The mission to be flown will be selected through a highly consultative and competitive process, and it will be consistent with the science priorities developed by the Canadian science community. The mission will employ innovative ways of keeping costs at a minimum, while preserving relevant heritage, and leveraging opportunities of international cooperation.
