The Arianespace solution for the deployment of the GALILEO constellation is based upon a combination of Ariane 5 and Soyuz vehicles launched from the European Spaceport in French Guiana. The launch requirements for this key European mission are to deliver the GALILEO satellites directly into three orbital planes at an altitude of around 23,000 km and an inclination of 56°. The Ariane 5 vehicle to be used for the GALILEO mission will be the standard Ariane 5 ECA. This vehicle will deploy the GALILEO upper composite to a standard injection orbit. The integrated composite consists of the six GALILEO satellites and a motorised dispenser. The dispenser, motorised with the Fregat manoeuvring stage will deliver the satellites directly to the final operational GALILEO orbit. This approach results in a good example of the flexibility and use of Europe's workhorse launch vehicle, Ariane 5, for a programme as challenging as GALILEO.
