摘要

This paper discusses the type of lunar architecture attributes and mission profiles that should provide a safe, reliable, and affordable means of supporting sustained human presence on the Moon. The architecture attributes are derived from experiences in both developing and operating the Apollo program, the Space Shuttle program, and the International Space Station program. Analysis of these programs has shown that there are benefits and disadvantages to depending on expendable or long-life multi-use systems for space operations. The concept of limited life elements and modules is introduced as a possible solution to the challenge of designing lunar architectures that utilize elements with the "appropriate" balance between reusability and maintenance. Mission abortability is also discussed as a critical element in architecture planning as a means of ensuring crew safety.
