At present, G.655 fibers have been widely adopted in the trunk lines of telecommunication systems; but their PMD value may vary randomly with the change of ambient temperature and external stress, which will limit the highest achievable data rates for single-mode systems. Thus, it is of high importance, especially for those high-speed transmission systems, to monitor the variation of the PMD value during fiber production, cabling process, and cable deployment and maintenance. In order to study the effect of ambient temperature and external stress on fiber PMD, in this paper, we propose a new idea that the fluctuations of ambient temperature can be simulated in the temperature cycling test while the real situation of cable installation in the mechanical performance test. After careful analysis of the test results, it can be concluded that this is an efficacious method to determine the influence of these two factors on fiber PMD.
