The significance of the melt strength for cable processing is addressed in this paper. The main factors, which can influence melt strength, are discussed. The comparison between branched low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and linear high-density polyethylene (HDPE) is made. Their melt strengths and of their blends were measured by using the melt tension flow method. And how to improve the quality of physically expanded foam insulation for radio-frequency (RF) coaxial cables is introduced in detail, including the selection of insulation compounds and equipments, the processing parameters and feedback control of extrusion line. Finally, we briefly summarize the processing techniques to solve some typical extrusion problems associated with poor melt strengths of flame retardant polyolefin (designated as FRPO), polyamide and HDPE.
