This paper discusses some new approaches by contemporary artists to the subject of space exploration and contextualises the work of the MIR network, a small alliance of European arts organisations working to open up space facilities to contemporary artists. It attempts to chart the history of these emerging practices, to identify their main proponents and describe their characteristics and significance.
