The demand for power as the critical factor driving the evolution of civilization, as well as the crisis in power engineering that is expected in the nearest future are the major causes making necessary to pool the capabilities of cosmonautics and find out the solution for the energy problems. New approaches to the development of space-based power systems are analyzed. The analysis takes account of power systems based on the advanced engineering and design achievements capable to reduce sufficiently the costs and time needed to bring the projects to fruition, as compared to the alternative framed or nuclear power plants.
