Sucrose recovery from sugarbeet molasses, and higher purity sugarbeet syrups, using ion exclusion chromatographic systems operating in a simulated moving bed (SMB) mode, has been widely studied and applied since the early 1980's. The first commercial SMB system for the desugarization of sugarbeet molasses was installed in 1985 at the Hokkaido Sugar Company's Kitami Factory, using technology developed by Amalgamated Sugar Company's Research Laboratory (now Amalgamated Research Inc. or ARi). Since that time, chromatographic systems have been installed at a number of sugarbeet production facilities in the United States and Europe but the application of chromatographic sucrose recovery technology to syrups derived from sugarcane has lagged far behind. Although various workers have studied the application of chromatographic technology to the recovery of sucrose from sugarcane molasses, the only commercial-scale systems known to have been designed for the purpose were a system constructed at Hokubu Sugar Co.'s Okinawa plant by Mitsubishi Kasei Corp. in the mid-1980's (apparently no longer in operation), a system using ARi technology at SIIC's Cairo refinery, and a recently installed system in Guadeloupe.
