This paper presents main results of CNR-TAE studies on the applicability of different fuels for Molten Carbonate Fuel Cells (MCFC). In this order, we analysed the performance of indirect internal reforming IIR-MCFC supplied by a mixture of steam/ethanol, steam/methanol and steam/methane. The thermodynamic equilibrium gas compositions as well as energy balances and power contributions for each examined fuel process have been determined. Some meaningful results are reported in terms of comparison between these IIR-MCFCs. It was found that ethanol steam reforming seems to be an attractive process for IIR-MCFC, but development of suitable carbon resistant catalyst appears as the challenge of the future research.
