Solid rocket motors are manufactured with finish machining. We must make sure that the propellant charge is perfectly adhered with the motor case, or else the flame may flow through the gap and cause combustion on undesirable surfaces of the charge. Traditionally, the interface condition between the motor case and the propellant is checked with an ultrasonic detector. To accelerate and visualize this process, an automated nondestructive testing system is promoted. The proposed testing process is divided into two steps. First we get the whole picture of the surface condition between the case and the charge with the help of the system developed. Then we can refer to the picture later for thorough analysis. The automated nondestructive testing system is mainly based on technologies of automation and graphical display. In hardware, the system is made up of an ultrasonic detector enhanced with a movement monitor, a signal adapter, a computer and corresponding buses. And in software the system is implemented on Windows development platform VC.
