The visual object-oriented (OO) modeling facility of the UML is widely used in industry and academia. But it dose not provide sufficient means to support the design of multi-agent system (MAS). In this paper, I analyze the modeling method of the UML and the difference between object and agent. Some efforts are proposed to extend the UML for modeling MAS, in which each agent structure is BDI. In the requirement analysis phase, object-based organization model and layered use case diagrams are constructed and proper agents, objects are identified according to appropriate granularity and their functions. In this process, it is necessary to distinguish agents from roles, objects and environment. In the design phase, I am using two views---external view and internal view. Extended sequence diagrams are used to represent communications between agents in the external view. In the internal view, stereotyped class and object diagrams are used to model different agents types, BDI meanings and extended state chart diagrams to show the reasoning process in one agent. An example using the extended-UML modeling method is provided at the same time.
