This investigation concerns the design of high endurance airfoils suitable for very low Reynolds number applications such as mini UAVs. Usually roughness or turbulators are needed to obtain satisfactory airfoil performance but they add drag at cruise. It is shown that the airfoil can be shaped to develop a trapped laminar bubble behind the nose which acts like an integral turbulator without increasing cruise drag at higher Re. New airfoil designs using integral turbulators are described suitable for Re from 6,000 to 40,000 and designed using XFOIL. Wind tunnel testing is in progress at UTIAS using an example suitable for Re 30,000. Some experimental results are compared with XFOIL predictions for performance and also for airfoil pressure distributions.
