One of the biggest concerns of a refinery is an upset on a process heater that results in an unsaferncondition, or possible downtime, and thus loss of production.rnIt is imperative that any possible situation that could cause an upset and lead to an unsaferncondition be identified as soon as possible so that appropriate actions can be taken eitherrnautomatically or manually, so such a condition could be alleviated, before it becomes a problem.rnThis paper discusses such an application and the use of a Quantum Cascade Laser (QCL)rnanalyzer to address the problem. Actual operating data from five analyzers used in thernapplication of an Independent Protection Layer (IPL) on three crude heaters and a reformer in anrnoil refinery is presented. The justification for the QCL analyzer is detailed.
