This paper is an update on developments based on a paper previously presented at IFPAC 2007rnand describes a high integrity, robust online sparging technique for the rapid detection of tracernlevels of hydrocarbons in process cooling water. Subsequent to detection, other techniques mayrnbe employed to speciate and quantify the leak.rnThe technology was originally developed in conjunction with an international oil refiningrncompany based at Sarnia, Ontario and since has been validated in closed loop and once throughrncooling water systems at other hydrocarbon processing facilities in Canada.rnThe threshold limit of detection is governed by the choice of detector and the volatility andrnsolubility of the hydrocarbon components of the leak. This paper discusses detection limits fromrnsub ppb to low ppm concentrations within 30 seconds according to the application, as well asrntechniques to validate detection.
