New water based coatings technologies: preparation, application and microwave drying

The use of water-based coatings in place of alcohol-based coatings is justified by the environmental, health, and safety problems foundrymen face. But their use poses problems in coating quality constancy and in drying constraints. A study conducted under a European project has determined the temperature and viscosity monitoring and control apparatus to be used, managed in real time by programmable automatic controller, and has led to the construction of an industrial prototype and the formulation of coatings suitable for the dipping of foundry cores using this technology, for which a patent application has been filed. This combination has been validated in several European foundries. Concurrently, a joint study with Electricite de France of the microwave drying of water-coated cores showed the validity of this type of drying. This body of work and its industrial applications have shown the technical and economic gains possible through the use of these technologies.
