Technological developments and worldwide market growth in Lost Foam casting production

Rapid advances in understanding and controlling the Lost Foam Casting process are being made around the world. Casting production is increasing about 20% per year in North America. Process development in the United States has focused on identifying and controlling the process parameters that control casting accuracy and quality. Instruments have been developed, field tested, and commercially used to reduce scrap and improve casting accuracy and quality. Some of the more important instruments and developments have included an air gaging system for accurately measuring foam dimensions, gages for measuring the rate of sand fill and compaction inside pattern cavities, low expansion mullite sands that reduce burn-on defects and improve casting precision, a pattern distortion gage, and models for the metal/pattern exchange that led to an apparatus for measuring coating permeability. This paper summarizes some of the more significant developments in process control and market growth in North America, Europe, and Asia.
