2001-01-01 Sweden adopted a new road design manual. The name is General technical construction specifications for roads (ATB VAEG). The manual is the result of a extensive work of revising the existing manual (ROAD 94) and the effort to write a new manual for maintenance and rehabilitation (Vaegunderhall 2000). The decision was made to merge these two manuals. The changes in the code ranges from a whole new approach in pavement design to requirements on certain materials used in a road. The biggest changes are: Maintenance and rehabilitation is described, Technical service life of a pavement has to be actively chosen for maintenance and rehabilitation purposes. No pavement designs tables is left, a linear-elastic model is used instead in the pavement design process, new computer program (PMS Object 2000) Cracks and rutting in bitumen bound materials respectively poor drainage reduces the pavement capacity for load bearing. New frost model allows for better pavement design. Life cycle cost analysis in the process. Environmental aspects. The computer program PMS Object 2000 comprises of a number of modules that help the engineer to do traffic calculations, pavement design, calculation of frost heave, choose the correct stone material in the wearing layer (not yet implemented) and perform a life cycle cost analysis (not yet implemented). The program will be distributed free of charge from the Swedish National Road Administrations homepage, www.vv.se, and on CD-ROM. The end result is a better and more cost effective pavement where environment and traffic safety aspects has been taken into account.
