Packing of Binary Mixtures of Powders: Effect of Particle Size Range

This paper presents an experimental study of the packing of two types of binary mixtures: fine and fine, and fine and coarse particles. The similarity between the packings of fine and coarse particles is first depicted and then the results are analysed in terms of interaction function and equivalent packing size ratio - the key concepts in the linear packing model for porosity prediction of powder mixtures. It is shown that the effective use of these concepts is dependent on the type of mixtures. In particular, the interaction function and the packing size ratio are not sensitive to size range for fine-fine mixtures but affected by not only relative but also absolute particle sizes for fine-coarse mixtures. Size range must be properly considered in developing a general model for porosity prediction.
