Wear particle morphology contain considerable evidence of wear mechanisms and processes. Knowledge about particle morphology does yield valuable information about how the particles were formed and from where they came. Particle microscopy is developing into a method that allows important morphological attributes of particles to be measured. Here the intention is to relate the morphology of particles to the wear process. The small particles come from oil samples collected from important process machines. An Optimas Image Analysis System and NIH Image apparatus were used to carry out the image process of the particles. The basic parameters and numerical shape descriptions of particle morphology are outlined and discussed. It was found that some particle morphological properties are good predictors of the wear mechanism that formed the particle.
