This paper describes two industrial situations in which traditional powder flowability testing, via a Jenike shear cell, was not feasible. In both cases, practical methods of flowability testing were developed that satisfied the industrial need without completely abandoning good bulk handling engineering practice. In the first case, methods were developed that allowed flowability measurements to be made, in a nitrogen atmosphere, of a powder that could not be exposed to air. In the second case, caking propensity and bin outlet requirements were estimated for very free-flowing bulk materials that did not gain sufficient strength to be assessed with a Jenike shear cell.
