This paper deals with blending highly segregating, and hence difficult to handle, bulk solids. The principal mechanisms by which blending can occur are briefly reviewed, as are the mechanisms by which the opposite of blending (segregation) generally occurs. Two case studies are presented which highlight methods of blending the aforementioned highly segregating bulk solids. The examples include blending equipment specially developed by engineers at Jenike & Johanson (J&J), namely (a) the BLENSERT~R tumble blender, and (b) the BINSERT~R hopper-in-hopper system. With reference to the BINSERT~R blender, typical velocity field patterns within both the insert and the annular region of the bin are highlighted.
