Microbially enhanced gas generation combined with CO_2 sequestration technology was investigated as a means to improve methane recovery from coal beds. Initial experimentation to indigenous methanogenic activity in Alberta coals was unsuccessful. Low microbial numbers and contamination could possibly have inhibited the culturing of any bacteria from the coal. However, a variety of different methanogenic consortia grown on medium and high volatile bituminous Alberta coals as sole energy and carbon sources demonstrated significant enhanced methane production in the coal-based cultures over a 3-month period. This is supporting evidence that optimizing the bacterial colonies in the coal can accelerate the natural process of bacterial generation of methane from subsurface coals.
