摘要

It is the role of a Science Operation Centre (SOC) tornprovide the technical support and expertise necessary tornassist a science community to plan and operate thernpayload on board a robotic scientific spacecraft in anrneffective and efficient manner. This paper discusses thernorigin of the set-up and running costs, inherent to SOCrnactivities, and what needs to be done to improve SOCsrnproductivity. Examples of what is being done, currently,rnto reduce the costs are also provided. We believe thatrnthe search for further cost reduction will greatly benefitrnfrom a centralised co-ordination. Ultimately, the need tornimprove SOC productivity will undoubtedly lead to arnredefinition of the role of the SOCs. We thereforernpropose what could be the future role of the SOCs and arnstrategy to identify the most effective ways of makingrnthe SOC evolves towards more productivity.
