In support of the ESA scientific programme thernEuropean Space Operations Centre (ESOC) hasrndeveloped and operates the three interplanetary missionsrnRosetta, Mars Express and Ve nus Express. The Rosettarnground segment was developed first, when the other twornmissions were not yet even approved. Highrncommonality between the Mars Express spacecraft andrnRosetta allowed a large re-use of the ground segmentrnelements, manpower and operations concept across therntwo missions. Finally, when the Venus Express missionrnwas approved, based on a twin spacecraft of MarsrnExpress, the existing ground segment already existingrnfor the two earlier missions could be simply reproducedrnas an almost identical copy for the third one. This newrnconcept of “family” of interplanetary missions hasrnallowed the enormous synergy among the threernmissions to be exploited on the ground segment, withrnsignificant cost savings both in the preparation phasernand in mission operations.
