Three-dimensional Analysis of Floor Surface Wear during Slip Resistance Measurements

This study is concerned with the wear phenomena of floor surfaces in the early stages of sliding friction in uncontaminated conditions and the relationships between slip resistance properties and operationally defined geometric characteristics of floor surfaces. One approach to measuring the topography changes that occur during wear,is to obtain a three-dimensional image of the floor surfaces at a microscopic level. In this study,a stereo scanning electron microscopy was used to obtain the images. Four metal specimens with different scales of surface roughness were rubbed against three shoes. Micrographs were obtained from the surfaces of the unrubbed initial specimens as well as the rubbed ones. The micrographs of the original surfaces showed that each specimen has unique topography patterns and features that were created by a shot blasting that was part of the preparation. From the first heel strike to the last,the surfaces clearly showed that each metal experienced different types of surface alterations and wear phenomena that evolved throughout the tests. The wear patterns depended on the particular combination of shoe material and floor geometry. Overall wear patterns of the each metal surface showed severe material transfer and film formation. Using the electron microscopy, the authors were able to obtain a unique history of the wear process in three dimensions and provide fresh light on the wear evolution of the floor surfaces. The floor surfaces were modified to a considerable extent during the initial few rubbings and the surface alterations were more intensified with further sliding. From this paper,questions were raised about how the changed floor topography would affect the slip resistance properties.
