Cardiovascular System Activity under the Increase of Mental Tension in Control Room Shiftworkers

High mental tension can affect the cardiovascular system activity, as well as shiftwork is proved to be a risk factor for cardiovascular pathology development. The purpose was to reveal the peculiarities of day-night changes in cardiovascular system activity of shiftworkers under usual and high mental work tension. Control room shiftworkers in usual and peak regime heat power plants were examined at night and morning 8-hour shifts. Peak regime of compensation of the energy consumption daily variation caused the stable increased work tension of shiftworkers. The equal mean aged groups (of 37 years) were compared (n = 20 shiftworkers, N = 167 subject-observations, and n =23, N = 175, respectively). Blood pressure,heart rate,and six calculated haemodynamic parameters were studied. Due to the average group data, blood pressure and heart rate in control room shiftworkers of the heat power plants were found within the limits of physiological norm under both-normal and increased-mental work tension. At the same time,the breaking of normal daily character of cardiovascular system activity variations as well as development of the predominance of its parasympathetic regulation were revealed under continuous high mental tension. This can lead to the unfavourable changes development in the cardiovascular system functioning. Hence, special attention should be paid to maintain good health of shift-workers under the increased productive demands.
