IntroductionDuring the past few years, Dimethyl ether (DME) has received growing attention because of its potential use as multi purpose fuel and it can be obtained from natural gas, coal, waste products and biomass[1]. DME can be used as a clean high efficiency compression ignition fuel with reduced Nox, Sox, and particulate matter[2]. As DME is easily liquefied, it can be distributed, stored and similar properties as propane and butane, permitting its use as a LPG substitute[3]. In addition, DME is an important chemical and it can be used as an aerosol propellant to replace chlorofluorocarbons due to its environmentally benign characteristics[4]. There are two methods for the production of DME from syngas: (i) a two-step indirect process comprising methanol synthesis and dehydration of methanol to DME; (ii) a single step using a bifunctional catalyst comprising a methanol synthesis component and a solid acid converting methanol and then future converting methanol to DME [5,6]. The main advantage of DME synthesis in a single step on a bifunctional catalyst is the alleviation of the thermodynamic limitation of the methanol synthesis alone[7]. But the best activity temperature of these two catalysts are mismatching.
