The transformation of the European electricity supply system to fully supply from renewable energy sources (RES),rnwhich is associated with the German “Energiewende”, brings up the question how RES could be optimally allocatedrnthroughout Europe in order to minimize the total generation costs. For this task, an optimization tool based on a geneticrnalgorithm was developed. The tool is able to optimize the capacity and allocation of RES, storage system and transmissionrnnetwork in a given energy system in order to get minimal overall economic costs. Exemplary results for the EUMENArnregion (Europe, Middle East and North Africa) show an optimal RES installed capacity of 2913 MW (Wind andrnPV),a storage capacity of 325 TWh and the installation of an HVDC overlay-grid with 1,140,000 GWkm transmissionrncapacity. If such a system was realized, costs of 11.9 Eurocent per consumed Kilowatt-hour would occur.
