Commercial Concepts for Adiabatic Compressed Air Energy Storage

Adiabatic compressed air energy storage (ACAES) systems offer the potential forrnefficient large-scale energy storage, almost approaching values typical for pumped hydro.rnIn an ACAES plant, the heat of compression is stored and utilized during the expansionrnof the air instead of firing natural gas like in commercial CAES. However, no ACAESrnplants have been commercialized due to challenges with respect to the cost and the heatrnstorage technology. In this study, conducted by EPRI, GE Global Research and GE Oil &rnGas, several concepts for ACAES plants are analyzed and their efficiency, complexityrnand technical risk compared. The components selected for the plants are available eitherrnoff-the-shelf or near-commercial within a short development time and without the highrncosts associated with developing a new generation of large custom-made compressorsrnand turbines. The most promising concept for near-term commercialization and low costsrnturns out to be a two-stage, low-temperature ACAES system. A regenerative (solid) and arnrecuperative (liquid) thermal storage system have been designed and analyzed for thisrnconcept, with the result that the liquid-recuperative system offers a much lower cost andrncomparable performance. Performance and cost targets for the concepts are 100 MWrnoutput per plant for 6 h with a round-trip efficiency above 60% and a capital cost of aboutrn$1000/kW. Selections of the turbomachinery for the compression and expansion trainrnfrom General Electric Oil & Gas are presented for several plant options along with theirrnexpansion power range (25…100 MW), round-trip efficiency (66%…70%) andrnpreliminary capital cost estimates (1100…1200 $/kW).
