To examine recovery from metal intoxication, roots of cowpea ( Vigna unguiculata L. ) were exposed to Al, Cu or La for 24 h before transfer to toxicant-free solutions. The three metals reduced growth and caused similar external morphological damage, but differed in their effects on root recovery. Al-intoxicated roots tended to recover, but those exposed to either Cu or La did not improve upon transfer. This suggests that while soluble Al appears exert its toxic effect by binding to the cell wall, Cu and La act more intracellularly and poison the cytoplasma.
