Although Brazil has the greatest tropical forest reserve in the world, wood products from the Amazon Region are difficult and expensive. The lack of forest management and the pressure from environmental groups result in a crescent need to substitute the native wood species to alternative reforestation species, closer to the consumption centers in the central and southern regions. Our country has yet the largest area of Eucalyptus plantation of the world. Besides, we have developed the best techniques in both management and genetic improvement. As we know, the substitution of native tropical wood by planted species decreases the pressure upon the tropical rainforest. Also, Eucalyptus is a fast growing species, planted closer to our industries. Facing these facts, the Forest Products Laboratory of IBAMA, which are Brazilian Institute of Environment and Natural Renewable Resources, started the development of edifications projects on the structural use of pressure treated Eucalyptus pole. In these constructions, such as the IBAMA's National Orchidary, a two-floor building located in Brasilia-DF, a new timber structural and construction system is used, where the key element is the double beam, with a remarkable aesthetics, showing at the same time the structural applicability of the Eucalyptus pole and its versatility. The beams are screwed to the pillars by means of screw-threaded bars, which receive round carvings or lateral "cradles" for a perfect accommodation of the pieces. The cradles are actually the supports for the beams and the bars act as connections between the beams and the pillars. This solution widely simplifies the execution of the structure, which is desirable to a product that can be used as construction material practically in its natural state.
