Gains in build quality and cost savings can be achieved by giving designers understanding of principles, and best-practice application rules, for modem serviceability limit states (SLS) design. This involves providing structural engineers with design tools and giving IT-based support to concept designers, leading to improvements in performance, user-satisfaction and appearance of timber frames. Improved understanding and provision of enabling design tools will deliver designed performance levels in buildings that enhance their value to clients and owners. The transfer of timber design codes in the UK to the more transparent, formula-structured limit states basis of the Structural Eurocodes can be seen as an additional incentive for development of user tools on an IT platform for timber design. This is a viable, modem alternative to the tabulated design solutions that pervade the British Standards timber design codes.
