OSB webbed I-beams are a relatively new application for floor joists in Europe, although they have been extensively used in North America in both roof and floor applications. Openings in the web that allow the passage of electrical wires and ventilation ducks weaken the joist locally and cause different failure patterns dependent upon size, location, shape of the opening and interaction between openings. In this paper, a non-linear finite element model, incorporating orthotropic and non-linear material behaviour, has been developed to simulate the structural performance of OSB webbed timber I-beams with openings. Structural tests of the I-beams with both circular and square openings were undertaken to validate the corresponding numerical models. Buckling of the web was also taken into consideration in the modelling based on observations of the experimental work. The effects of openings on structural behaviour of these beams are discussed and the correlation between experimental behaviour and finite element simulations is presented.
