摘要

The Modern Wooden Town project is a national umbrella project whose goal is to use timber construction to create pleasant, examplary residential milieus in different parts of Finland. The objective is to learn from the old timber construction tradition, renew it to meet today's requirements and benefit from the latest results of timber construction research. Thus, the emphasis in Finnish timber construction has intentionally been shifted from technical solutions and individual buildings to broader topics of milieus, living comfort and resident-orientation. The intention is to use the constructed sites to increase the national and international credibility and competitiveness of Finnish timber construction. Another purpose of the practical projects is to guarantee the continuity of recent development and practical experience and maintain the level of available skill and knowledge in timber construction. The University of Oulu's Department of Architecture's Wood Studio has been the national co-ordinator of the Modem Wooden Town project since 1997. The Wood Studio is continuing the theme as a national Wood Product Field's Centre of Expertise network until 2006. As a result of the good example sites, interest in wood milieu construction has increased strongly in recent years in Finland and the other Nordic countries.
