For the last few years, the intensive research of the strengthening possibility of the glulam timber beams by using FRP plates has been done. This article presents the results of the lab tests and numerical analyses done at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Zagreb. The lab tests were done on real specimens of glulam timber beams of 3.9 m span. Tested were beams with straight and with radial arched intrados, and with double-pitched extrados. The numerical analyses were done by using, FEM software COSMOS/M 2.5. The main goal of the tests was to determine the possibility of strengthening the glulam timber beams by using FRP plates. The research was done by testing possibility of strengthening the tensile stresses perpendicular to the grains in apex zone of researched beams, as well as strengthening the beams by built-in FRP plates in tension zone. Strengthening in apex zone was tested by gluing FRP plates perpendicular to the grain on outer surfaces of the glulam timber beams. Gluing the FRP plates was done by two-component epoxy resin produced in Switzerland by Scherer & Partner whose FRP plates were also used for this testing.
