In Eastern Canada, black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) has recently been introduced to finger-joined wood products. While there is a growing economic importance of the species in such applications, little information is available on the manufacturing parameters that influence the finger-jointing process for this particular species. Therefore, the main objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of wood machining parameters on the structural performance of finger-joined products of black spruce in order to achieve an optimum finger-jointing process. Parameters investigated in this study were chip-load and cutting speed. Feather joint configuration was used with isocyanate adhesive, assembled with an end pressure of 550 psi. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed no significant effect of the cutting speed and chip-load on the finger-jointing performance of black spruce. However, the second degree polynomial relationship obtained for the chip-load was not far from being significant. Results indicated that optimum finger-jointing in black spruce could be achieved at a chip-load of 0.034 inch. Wood failure was mostly produced along the joint profile but with some failures at the finger roots, indicating an excellent performance of the gluelines. This study is an important step towards a better understanding of the black spruce finger-jointing process which will assist the wood product industry in optimizing its finger-jointing operations.
