In a building design, one of the designer's tasks is to obtain a suitable type, shape and size of column for their structural elements. However, in many cases the column should also be designed to withstand the load at elevated temperature. There are wide ranges of parameters to consider for wood columns to withstand the load at an elevated temperature. This paper discusses the effect of different boundary conditions, and configurations on temperature history, the fire resistance for wood column and charring area on the performance of wood columns. The selected cross sectional areas for all configurations are fixed at 361 cm~2. The applied load (1380 kN) for temperature history and fire resistance analysis is taken about half of the stress of Malaysian Keruing timber multiplied by the above cross-section. However, when analyzing the charring area, the load is taken smaller than the above mentioned to prolong the failure time and see the effect of fire in formulating the amount of char generated. The failure time is also calculated at that particular load level (667 kN). A performance comparison among different column configurations (circular, square, rectangular, hexagonal, octagonal and I-cross section) has been carried out in this study. It was found from the simulation results that the best cross section capable to sustain fire is the circular cross section column.
