The area of computer supported collaborative work (CSCW) is of growing importance for modern industries. Integrated workflow systems allow globally distributed teams to work together. In many areas, like in electronic design automation (EDA), tool integration is a critical issue enabling CSCW. Existing tools have to be integrated into the workflows. Over time, the tools have to be updated or deployed on different locations. A tool integration approach should transparently support such system evolution by providing the necessary abstraction from particular tool instances at the management level to enable dynamic tool allocation. This can be achieved by having tool integration based on the operational semantics of the tools. We propose a generic model-based approach on component integration that enables semantic-based tool description. The approach is discussed in the context of dynamic tool management in the EDA area.
