As of January 6, 2006, the NETL's "Tracking New Coal-Fired Power Plants" listed 135 solid fuel projects proposed for development in the United States. Of these proposed projects, nineteen (19) are listed as Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plants. There are currently two (2) large utility IGCC plants operating in the United States and several others operating in Europe and Japan. Some believe IGCC plants, rather than conventional pulverized coal technologies, will be predominately used to replace aging coal power plants and increasingly expensive natural gas power plants.The objective of this paper will be to provide a high level assessment of the comparative advantages and some disadvantages of an IGCC versus conventional solid fuel combustion technologies. This shall include discussions on fuel flexibility, land space required, efficiency, emissions of air pollutants and hazardous wastes, sulfur and mercury removal, water use, reliability, risks, operating costs and capital costs.The paper will include an overview of the major IGCC components including air separation, gasification, coal unloading and preparation, syngas cleanup, combined-cycle power block, and sulfur removal and recovery.
