The synthesis and evaluation of structure and electronic properties of materials featuring mixed anions remains largely an unexplored area of research. In this communication, we report our preliminary results on the structure, electrical and magnetic properties of cobalt-doped titanium nitride-fluorides. Synthesis of these phases has been accomplished by a low-temperature ammonolysis of metal fluorides at various temperatures in the range 300-700℃. The Co-doped TiNF is shown to adopt an anatase-like structure (space group I 41/amd) at low temperatures. A transformation to rutile-like phase is observed when the anatase form of the nitride-fluoride is heated to temperatures above 600℃ in ammonia atmosphere. The temperature dependent electrical resistivity measurements established the semiconducting nature of the sample with variable-range-hopping. Field dependent magnetization loops confirmed the existence of ferromagnetism at room temperature. Results of this study will be compared to the recent reports on the cobalt-doped TiO_2 (anatase) proposed for spintronics applications.
