Microsilica is today recognised as one of the most used and valuable additives for Fibre Cement products. Handling and proper use of this material can be critical to obtain the maximum benefits from the product. This paper will show the way through the labyrinth. Many details have to be taken into consideration when an existing asbestos cement producing plant is converted into a non-asbestos fibre cement plant. Thinking ahead is important, because the consequences of the fundamental initial choice of materials and lay-out for the handling equipment are often vital for the investment cost and the operational economy. Elkem has through the years worked together with fibre cement producers and has built up an experience that we offer as assistance and support for asbestos cement (AC) producers during the conversion process. This paper outlines how the different delivery forms of microsilica can influence the processing options for a FC product, and covers the route from the production of the material, the storage and handling to the dosage and dispersion into the production process.
