On December 23, 1994, a few minutes before 18,00 h, a severe fire started in the first stage pygas (pyrolysis gasoline) hydrogenation of DSM's no.3 naphtha cracker (NAK3). A mixture of gasoline, hydrogen and nickel catalyst escaped through a crack in the wall of the reactor, whihc was operating at a pressure of 30 bar. The mxture immediately caught fire, producing a 40-m flame jet. Production personnel sounded the alarm and activated the emergency system ,thereby shutting down the entire plant.
