MEMS has seen exciting technical and commercial development over the last several decades. MEMS sensors are now ubiquitous in the market place in products from automobiles to appliances, from smart weapons to medical devices. MEMS has not been an easy technology to commercialize. Its promise has sometimes been elusive, but some notable commercial successes have been achieved. Now a large industry, it is far from mature, and businesses that will affect the future of MEMS are being created today. Mergers and acquisitions are playing an increasingly important role and have liquidity implications for MEMS enterprises.rnStarting in 1965, the author has spent his entire career commercializing silicon MEMS sensors. He has participated in the growth of three successful MEMS sensor companies Measurement Specialties, NovaSensor and Kulite Semiconductor. Each of these enterprises grew from startups to significant size during his tenure. Along with successful growth some hard and not so hard lessons were learned.rnThis presentation presents what worked and what didn't work for the author. It discusses the complex mix of people, strategy, financing, technology and marketing and opportunity that when blended in the right mix create success.
