1.Introduction In 2009,typhoon Morakot hit Taiwan.It became the deadliest typhoon in Taiwan due to a long-lasting zonal rainband extending from the Taiwan Strait to southwestem Taiwan during and after Morakot's landfall,which dumped peak rainfall accumulations of more than 2500 mm during a 60-h period ending at 1200 UTC 9 August in mountainous southem Taiwan.The resultant mudslide and flooding caused enormous devastation,leaving more than 600 deaths and billions of USD in damages.Thus,numerically reproducing this rainband as accurately as possible is important for the prediction of Morakot's catastrophic rainfall.
