The Seattle-King County Healthy Homes Project is a randomized, controlled trial of an outreach/education intervention to improve health status in asthmatics by reducing exposure to allergens and irritants in the home. The homes of 274 low-income children with asthma age 4-12 were assigned to either a high or low intensity intervention group for one-year. Vacuuming behavior improved in the high intensity group and exposure reduction was found for dust weight, dust mite and dog antigen, roaches, tobacco smoke, moisture, any of five antigens, and asthma trigger score. The low intensity group also had reductions in some exposures. These findings show that a one- year comprehensive home intervention is effective at reducing many triggers in homes of low-income children with asthma.
