Rescheduling operation is centrally important for a rail line under an abnormal condition,because a primary delay may cause a severe consequent delay. The paper presents asimulation model to investigate the performance of rescheduling operations. We develop anevent-oriented model of rail transit to simulate train flow, passenger flow, and traffic controloperations, under normal or abnormal system conditions, with or without reschedulingoperations. Testing results of three types of rescheduling operations are presented. Theyare (1) speed and time control to reduce regular running time and/or dwell time, (2) holdingpreceding and/or following trains to regulate headway, and (3) canceling the operation ofdelayed trains. Four criteria are used to evaluate the system performance of a reschedulingoperation from both the passenger and the operator’s viewpoint. They are (1) the averagetravel time, (2) the load factor difference, (3) the number of delayed trains, and (4) the
