Information systems and technology in health care are a complex business but one that hospital managers must understand, control and own if they are to be successful. Hospitals are regarded as a complex organization with one or more production lines, which ultimately deliver products as a number of treated patients. In many ways clinical departments can be compared to industrial production lines. These service units are compared with one other on the basis of the effectiveness and efficiency with which they carry out their work. Traditionally management information systems MIS were supplied by a paper records system, often with problems such as disorganized, illegible and inconsistent content. There is a need to use modern management information systems in the health sector to shift the emphasis away from organizational problems and into how hospitals' cost and activity information can be used to improve the quality and efficiency of patient care.
